Enneagram: A Universal Symbol

This article is also available in Italian and Spanish

Enneagram

A circumference.  A triangle.  Six lines.  Nine points.  A curious combination of geometrical elements; this is what many would see when looking at it.  Others instead came to affirm that the comprehension of this symbol could unveil the interpretation of any science, the mechanism of any system and the laws that govern them.

G.I.Gurdjieff

Others have seen in it “The Nine Faces of God” and others believe it represents the fusion between the “Law of Seven” and the “Law of Three”.

Armenian-Russian mystic and controversial researcher G.I. Gurdjieff, who introduced the study of the Enneagram in Europe last century, defined it “the alchemists’ philosopher stone”.

A Harmony of Lines: Celtic Knotwork by Cathy Douglas

I find it fascinating to follow the ins and outs of Celtic knotwork, whether I’m trying to draw one or paper or just trace a design etched in silver.  Weaving so many lines together into a pattern, especially deciding where to run one line over or under another, takes some concentration.  And yet artists have been carving simple versions of these patterns for millennia.

We think of this traditional knotwork as Celtic, but similar patterns go back to rock carvings from the neolithic, and come to us from many parts of the world.  In fact, there’s some controversy about whether the Vikings adopted the style from the Celts or vice versa.  But line-crossing patterns aren’t limited to Europe, and indeed we find uncanny similarities between patterns of the British Isles, India, and China...

Symbols for Strength

A regular reader contacted me in special need of an emblem that would bolster his confidence.  He wanted a symbol for strength, courage and self-confidence as he was going through a difficult time – to which I responded:
 Dear Down-but-not-Out:
Some strong animal totems that boost confidence and facilitate strength and belief in yourself are:
Bull
Peacock
Cougar
Bear
Eagle
Tiger
Lion
Panther
The Dragon has always served me well as a symbol of self-confidence and courage.  Dragon totems – can make the heart beat stronger – instill fire within,  and may enable you to stand taller both physically & spiritually speaking.
Warriors often tattoo themselves with their family coat of arms (crest) to quicken their blood in battle, and give them courage to fight...

Symbol for Mother

.Although there is no single universal symbol for mother, the meaning of mother asabsolutely universal.

This is largely due to the fact that we all have a mother and each of us has our own distinct idea of what mother means to us; each impression is more different than the next. Because of vastly varying perception of the mother concept – the symbols for her are endless.

From the Madonna to Doves, and from the Lioness to Gardens, the symbol for mother is only limited by the perceiver’s perspective.

I’ve said it time and again, and still maintain that symbols are unique and personal to each of us. What one might deem as the ultimate mother symbol, another will scoff at its implication.

That said, below are a few common cultural symbols for mother...

Symbolic Meaning of the Penny

Consider the penny as a symbol of beginnings as it holds the vibration of number One.

The meaning of Oneprimarily deals with strong will, positivity, pure energy.  The number One reflects new beginnings, and purity. The symbolic meaning of the penny (number One) is further clarified when we understand that One represents both kinds of action, physical and mental.

This combined with the One’s urgency for new beginnings, we intuit number Oneto mean it is time to exert our natural forces, take action, and start a new venture. Numeral One gives us encouragement that our actions will be rewarded in kind.

Appropriate to the theme of new beginnings, we see Abraham Lincoln depicted on this currency.  This is symbolic of founding fathers concept, and deals withfoundation...
